Amnesty International Responds to Dutch Withdrawal
Steve Cockburn, Regional Director for Europe at Amnesty International, issued a statement regarding the announcement by the Dutch public broadcasting organization (NPO) that the Netherlands will not participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027. The decision stems from concerns over Israel’s continued involvement in the competition.
Cockburn described the NPO as the latest national broadcaster to opt out of the event in protest against Israel’s presence. He stated that this move sends a clear message that no platform should be provided to cover up what he termed genocide and ethnic cleansing against Palestinians, as well as the apartheid system imposed upon them. The director highlighted the refusal of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to suspend Israel’s participation, characterizing it as cowardly.
The statement emphasized that Israel’s participation in Eurovision serves as a platform to distract from ongoing actions in the occupied Gaza Strip and accelerated annexation procedures and ethnic cleansing operations in the occupied West Bank, thereby normalizing these acts. Amnesty International called on the EBU, its members, and affiliated bodies to suspend Israel’s participation in the contest, asserting that no stage should be available as a tool to conceal genocide.
NPO Justifies Decision Based on Sensitivities
The Dutch public broadcaster, which oversees public broadcasting in the Netherlands, reached its decision after consulting with other broadcasting organizations. It concluded that support for participation was insufficient. The NPO attributed its withdrawal to the sensitivities associated with Israel’s participation in the competition.
