Amnesty International has called on Iraq’s government to meet its human rights commitments by ending systemic impunity for violations, protecting the rights of women and girls, and guaranteeing fundamental freedoms.
The call was made in an open letter to Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, timed to mark three months since Iraq’s new government programme was adopted.
The letter sets out its demands under three headings: accountability for human rights violations, the rights of women and girls, and basic freedoms. Systemic impunity, in the language used by human rights organisations, does not describe a single case that goes unpunished but a pattern in which violations repeatedly bring no investigation, no prosecution and no redress.
